Surat al-Balad · The City

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 1

   لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ۝١ayah 1

   I swear by this land.

2. 2

   وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ۝٢ayah 2

   And you are a resident of this land.

3. 3

   وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ ۝٣ayah 3

   And by a father and what he fathered.

4. 4

   لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ ۝٤ayah 4

   We created man in distress.

5. 5

   أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ ۝٥ayah 5

   Does he think that no one has power over him?

6. 6

   يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا ۝٦ayah 6

   He says, “I have used up so much money.”

7. 7

   أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ ۝٧ayah 7

   Does he think that no one sees him?

8. 8

   أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ ۝٨ayah 8

   Did We not give him two eyes?

9. 9

   وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ ۝٩ayah 9

   And a tongue, and two lips?

10. 10

    وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ ۝١٠ayah 10

    And We showed him the two ways?

11. 11

    فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ ۝١١ayah 11

    But he did not brave the ascent.

12. 12

    وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ ۝١٢ayah 12

    And what will explain to you what the ascent is?

13. 13

    فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ۝١٣ayah 13

    The freeing of a slave.

14. 14

    أَوْ إِطْعَـٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ ۝١٤ayah 14

    Or the feeding on a day of hunger.

15. 15

    يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ ۝١٥ayah 15

    An orphan near of kin.

16. 16

    أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ ۝١٦ayah 16

    Or a destitute in the dust.

17. 17

    ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ ۝١٧ayah 17

    Then he becomes of those who believe, and advise one another to patience, and advise one another to kindness.

18. 18

    أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ۝١٨ayah 18

    These are the people of happiness.

19. 19

    وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ۝١٩ayah 19

    But as for those who defy Our revelations—these are the people of misery.

20. 20

    عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ ۝٢٠ayah 20

    Upon them is a padlocked Fire.
